Myanmar is the world’s largest producer of jade. While the industry is estimated to be worth billions of dollars annually, it has historically been shrouded in secrecy.
Open Data: Myanmar Jade, a website from NRGI, sheds light on the industry using the latest data released through the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and the Myanmar Gems Enterprise. The project is a platform to strengthen public understanding of the sector and to support greater transparency.
The site has three components:
- Data stories explore the impact of the jade industry in Myanmar through data visualizations, analyses and interviews.
- Data Tools make large datasets on jade licenses and revenue flows accessible with interactive visualizations and explorable dashboards.
- Datasets let researchers and advanced data users dig into clean, machine-readable data that is ready to use.
Open Data: Myanmar Jade is supported by the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) and the School of Data. Visit the site at www.openjadedata.org.
