The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) and NADEL-Center for Development and Cooperation at world top-ten university ETH Zürich will host “Natural Resource Governance and Development: Policies and Practice” course online.

This advanced-level multi-stakeholder course is open to exceptional leaders from government, civil society, parliaments, media, international development agencies, industry associations as well as academics, researchers and analysts from universities and think tanks.

The course is designed to equip a pool of exceptional professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to contribute towards better governance and oversight of natural resources for a better future. Specifically, the course will examine the political economy of governance in resource-​rich states and explore how it impacts domestic policy debates and practice. These skills are paramount to leaders in natural resource governance who need to understand the impact of politics and power on policy outcomes.

Course dates:
28 September 2021 2pm-​4pm CET – Introductory lecture
29 September – 31 October 2021 – Self-​study phase (no live lectures)
8 November – 19 November 2021 – Live phase (core live sessions 2pm-​4pm CET and additional sessions in the mornings and afternoons)
19 November 2021 3pm CET – Closing event: “The renewed relevance of resource governance in the age of the energy transition”


The 2021 course will cover topics including:
  • Discovery and allocation of resource rights
  • The political economy of natural resource extraction
  • Fiscal regimes and taxation
  • Managing natural resource revenues and investment
  • State-owned companies governance
  • Environmental and social impacts of extraction
  • Corruption and accountability
The course is made up of online self-​study material (readings, videos, online fora and online quizzes and exercises) and interactive live lectures by leading experts, group discussions and skill-​building workshops. Course participants also have the opportunity to sign up for online one-​​​on-​one clinics with our experts to discuss individual challenges they are facing in their respective contexts.  

Workload:
27 September – 31 October, 2021 approx. 30h (self-​paced, introductory session attendance mandatory)
8 November – 19 November, 2021 approx. 30h (core session attendance mandatory)

Course fee:
CHF 1500

A limited number of scholarships covering the course fees are available on a competitive basis for members of government, civil society, parliaments, and the media from selected resource-rich countries: DRC, Ghana, Mexico, Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. A restricted number of exceptions from this list may be made for outstanding applicants from other countries.
