Bridging the Gap Between Methane Policy and Implementation in Nigeria
NRGI’s Tengi George-Ikoli spoke with Nigeria Info FM about why Nigeria must act decisively to cut methane emissions from its oil and gas sector even as it seeks to grow its gas-based economy.
She said:
“Reducing methane emissions is about protecting our economy, health, and future. Nearly half of Nigeria’s oil goes to Europe, but new rules could block dirty fuels. If we don’t clean up how we produce gas, we could lose important buyers. We’ve made promises, but now it’s time to act. That means tracking emissions in real-time, enforcing the rules, and making data open to everyone. The government can’t do it alone. Companies, communities, and citizens also have a role to play. We must start with action to reach our energy and climate goals.”
