The global energy transition presents a unique opportunity for resource-rich African countries to achieve socioeconomic transformation and environmental sustainability. Nations that can strategically harness their abundant reserves of critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies and promote innovation stand to benefit the most.

However, realizing these benefits is not guaranteed. Weak governance systems, policy incoherence and corruption risks could undermine progress and exacerbate inequality. To effectively seize these opportunities and mitigate risks, African governments must adopt forward-looking economic and industrial policies that align with the imperatives of the energy transition. This includes fostering transparent, inclusive, and accountable governance across the extractive sector, ensuring that resource wealth contributes to long-term equitable development.

About the training

The Anglophone Africa Extractive Industries Knowledge Hub (AFREIKH) is a flagship capacity-building initiative co-hosted by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) and the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI). This one-week intensive summer school aims to close knowledge gaps in Africa’s extractive and energy sectors. It brings together key stakeholders from across Anglophone Africa to explore the evolving governance challenges and opportunities in the extractive sector, particularly in the context of the energy transition.

As part of the program, participants will engage with expert-led sessions, peer learning and practical case studies, culminating in attendance at the Future of Energy Conference (FEC). This event offers a dynamic platform to examine innovative solutions and strategic approaches for achieving a just and sustainable energy future for Africa.

Target audience

The summer school targets civil society organizations (CSOs), media, researchers and government officials working to promote good governance in extractive industries. Graduates become part of a vibrant alumni network that offers continued mentorship, professional development, and a platform for learning, collaboration and collective action across Africa.
