How Transparent Data Can Drive Accountability in Nigeria’s Methane Emission Management
NRGI’s Ahmad Abdulsamad spoke with Cool FM Port Harcourt about the community impact of methane emissions and why it is one of the biggest climate and economic risks Nigeria must address.
He said:
“When people see gas flares, they see fire and smoke, but what they don’t see is methane—the invisible gas that traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide. This makes it one of the fastest drivers of climate change. Nigeria has made big promises to cut methane, but progress has been slow. Flaring remains widespread, emissions persist, and transparency remains weak. The good news is that methane reduction is achievable. We need strict enforcement of existing rules, open and reliable data, and stronger alignment with global standards. Government, industry, and communities all have a role in making this happen. They must act now to protect lives, safeguard our economy, and strengthen Nigeria’s energy transition.”
