The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) International Secretariat and the Gender Justice and Extractives Industries Working Group (which includes NRGI) hosted a virtual peer-learning workshop on advancing gender equality in the extractives sector through EITI implementation.

The event aimed to provide guidance and share best practice on the EITI's gender provisions to support more inclusive extractive sector governance. Drawing on the expertise of civil society partners and EITI practitioners, the event focused on four themes:

  • Gendered impacts of corruption
  • Advancing women’s rights through reporting
  • Gender in extractive sector policies and legal frameworks
  • Managing social and economic benefits
Participants were encouraged to engage in break-out sessions to share lessons learned and devise recommendations for EITI stakeholders. The outcomes of these discussions will help guide EITI multi-stakeholder groups in implementing gender-related provisions of the EITI Standard.

As part of this workshop, NRGI hosted the "Gender in extractive sector legal and policy frameworks" session. The session provided an overview of how women and gender are characterised in legal and policy frameworks for the extractive industries. Building on NRGI's research in partnership with the World Resources Institute, the session explored how countries are using laws, contracts and government policy to address the gender-differentiated impacts of the extractive sector.
