The Impact of the Global Energy Transition on Mining Dynamics in Africa’s Highly Biodiverse Countries
27 October 2024 Cali, Colombia
This panel explored the challenges and opportunities associated with mineral extraction in African countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Ghana, within the framework of the global energy transition. It will focus on issues related to environmental sustainability, conflicts, forest protection and development.
The panel also aimed to identify ways in which illegal extraction can be tackled in their countries, including measures to improve traceability and accountability in the global market. The lessons learned from this panel will feed into Colombia's initiative to strengthen international cooperation and traceability on minerals and gold, aiming to reduce conflict and contribute to peace, while protecting biodiversity.
