Preventing corruption in the renewable energy sector: Lesson learned from extractive industries (PWYP Global Assembly)
19 February 2025 • 2:30PM WIB Jakarta, Indonesia
The global transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy is a crucial step in combating climate change. However, this process faces significant challenges, including corruption, posing a major obstacle to its effectiveness. Corruption undermines climate commitments under frameworks such as the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals, all of which rely on transparent governance. The demand for minerals used in renewable technologies could quadruple by 2040, according to the International Energy Agency, yet corruption in extractive industries hampers this progress. While renewables are growing, especially in power generation, corruption risks persist. In this session, we will share insights on how to address these risks in the extractive sector and guide improvements in governance for renewable energy.
This event is part of the Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Global Assembly 2025.
