Red Flags, Green Future: Tackling Corruption in Licensing for Transition Minerals Projects

Tension and competition are heating up around the world over access to minerals, from geopolitical disputes to grassroots protest. Much of this unrest revolves around two critical questions: who has the rights to extract these minerals, and how are they treating nearby communities and ecosystems? The licensing process in formal mining provides the setting for addressing these questions, yet NRGI’s research shows that this moment is particularly ripe for corruption.
This webinar will highlight findings from NRGI’s recently published report Ten Red Flags for Corruption Risk in Transition Minerals Licensing and Contracting, which identified corruption red flags from over 50 cases of corruption in the licensing and contracting of transition minerals projects. With perspectives from a diverse range of actors across the mining and anticorruption ecosystem, this discussion will examine the types of corruption that may take place, the harm it causes, and the collective actions needed to deliver a fairer and more responsible energy transition.
