Joseph Aganze Gubanja
Mining Governance Lead
Joseph manages NRGI’s involvement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Good Governance Activity, funded by USAID, in collaboration with DAI, overseeing its implementation in Haut-Katanga and Lualaba provinces. He also provides technical support to mining specialists in Haut-Uele and Tshopo provinces.
Joseph has over 10 years' experience in natural resource management, community engagement, risk analysis, and project leadership. He has focused on the artisanal mining sector in the DRC and management of responsible supply chains for minerals from conflict zones or high-risk areas. He has led key DRC initiatives such as the Mercury-Free ASGM project funded by the U.S. State Department, along with the SMSV and ITSCI projects funded by USAID and implemented by PACT and partners.
Joseph holds a degree in geology and mining exploration from the Official University of Bukavu. He has further training in project management and is pursuing a master’s degree in environment and natural resource management at the University of Goma. He is fluent in French and Swahili, and has knowledge of Lingala, Kirundi and Kinyarwanda.
