Envisioning Colombia’s Energy Transition: The Power of Narratives to Foster Equity and Justice
This page features NRGI’s contribution to the IDS Bulletin’s special issue on Just Energy Transitions, which brings together research and perspectives on how communities, governments and civil society can shape fairer pathways away from fossil fuels. In this edition, NRGI colleagues authored a chapter examining the role of public narratives in Colombia’s energy transition.
Colombia’s energy transition debate is marked by strong polarization and dominated by powerful political and economic interests. As the government’s proposal to phase out fossil fuels has gained international attention, many domestic narratives continue to marginalize the perspectives of civil society organisations and communities in fossil-fuel-producing regions.
In response, NRGI and partners convened a diverse group of social actors to co-create a metanarrative and a set of alternative narratives rooted in justice, equity and inclusion. This chapter explores how these shared narratives can counterbalance exclusionary discourses, strengthen community voices and support a more just and inclusive transition pathway for the country.
