How Can Governments and Miners Build Partnerships that Deliver Long-term Value? (Mining Indaba)
11 February 2026 • 9:15AM SAST Sahara Stage (CTICC2 - Level 2), Cape Town International Convention Centre
Minerals offer multi-generational development opportunities for the communities where they are mined. But has the balance of responsibility for delivering that development become too one-sided? If mining companies feel they are carrying an outsized share of the development burden, will they scale back investment or exit certain regions altogether? And if governments push harder for local value addition without the right enabling conditions, could projects become unviable?
This event will take a closer look at how governments and mining companies can rebalance their roles to create partnerships that are commercially viable, socially legitimate and development-oriented. It will examine practical approaches to sharing responsibilities for infrastructure, skills, local content and community development; the policy and regulatory conditions needed to unlock sustainable value addition; and how trust, transparency and long-term planning can help ensure mineral wealth translates into lasting benefits for host countries and communities.
