Just Transition in Oil- and Gas-Producing Territories: Perspectives from Latin America and Africa (COP30)
18 November 2025 • 1:00PM BRT Colombia Pavilion, UNFCCC Blue Zone, COP30
As countries confront the global shift away from fossil fuels, oil- and gas-producing regions, from the Niger Delta to the Amazon and coastal Mexico, face social, economic, and environmental challenges. The urgency lies not only in moving beyond oil, but in ensuring that the transition is fair, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of local communities that have long borne the costs of extraction.
This event, hosted by NRGI, will bring together voices from Latin America and Africa to explore how producer regions can plan and finance just, inclusive transitions. It will also feature the launch a new policy brief, Just Transition in Oil- and Gas-Producing Territories: Lessons and Pathways Toward an Equitable Transformation, which brings together evidence and perspectives from producing territories to identify concrete pathways for equitable transitions beyond fossil fuel dependence.
Objectives
Present NRGI’s policy brief “Just Transition in Oil- and Gas-Producing Territories: Lessons and Pathways Toward an Equitable Transformation.”
Share experiences on the just transition in oil- and gas-producing countries in Africa and Latin America from a territorial perspective.
Analyze fiscal, economic, and socio-environmental challenges of oil dependence in producing territories, including in the Amazon.
Highlight opportunities to rethink development models and promote equitable, inclusive, and climate-just transitions beyond oil dependence
