Launch of the UN Secretary-General's Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals
3 May 2024 • 12:00PM EDT New York, U.S. and online
Watch the launch of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' ambitious High-Level Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, co-chaired by Ambassador Nozipho Joyce Mxakato-Diseko of South Africa and Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy of the European Commission.
NRGI president and CEO Suneeta Kaimal is a member of the panel and made an intervention on the role of civil society at the launch.
"As a representative of one of the civil society organizations invited to participate in this panel, I first want to commend the efforts of the Secretary-General and my fellow panelists. We have an ambitious agenda. My particular concern from the civil society perspective is to ensure that there is a broad-based consultation so that civil society perspectives lead the definition of very concrete economic, social and environmental targets for mineral-producing countries to benefit equitably and to minimize farms from mining. I want to emphasize great ambitions for the panel, but also hope that we can rise beyond the many current existing standards and make sure that we are moving toward action on levers that will ensure concreteness in delivering those benefits to developing countries."
