Strengthening Methane Emissions Reduction Strategies in Nigeria’s Gas Expansion Plans
23 July 2024 • 9:00AM WAT Abuja, Nigeria, and online
Nigeria is actively pursuing the expansion of gas utilization for power and non-power uses, including cleaner cooking, transportation, and industrialization, as a transition fuel towards a low-carbon economy. However, expanding the gas sector will lead to increased extraction and processing, raising significant concerns about environmental, economic, and social risks. It is important to mitigate these risks, notably the potential rise in methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas which could undermine Nigeria’s climate and energy transition goals. Additionally, Nigeria must make realistic decisions about its gas ambitions given its infrastructure and financial limitations.
The multistakeholder dialogue will convene government agencies, civil society, industry leaders, and international partners to chart a sustainable path forward for Nigeria’s gas ambitions. It will provide a platform for stakeholders to:
- Discuss findings and recommendations from a new NRGI briefing, on "Strengthening Methane Emissions Reduction in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector," which will be unveiled at the dialogue.
- Build consensus on actionable methane emissions reduction strategies towards achieving a just energy transition.
- Determine pathways to align and right-size Nigeria's gas ambitions within the context of its climate goals and economic realities.
