Public Accountability of National and Global Emissions Reduction Commitments

The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) has focused on strengthening efforts to address methane emissions as part of Nigeria’s broader energy transition. With gas playing a major role, we are conscious of the need for Nigeria to align its gas expansion ambitions with national and global climate commitments, as outlined in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), the Energy Transition Plan, and the Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Action Plan (SLCP).
One significant barrier has been the lack of publicly available emissions data, which restricts civil society’s ability to monitor and hold both the government and companies accountable for their commitments. NRGI has supported the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) in developing a disclosure template for company emissions data. This template, now validated and incorporated into NEITI’s 2022 and 2023 oil and gas audits, has resulted in the public disclosure of emissions data from 15 oil and gas companies. The audits represent a critical step toward enhanced transparency and accountability.
This fireside chat at the Nigeria Accountability Summit 2024 will focus on advancing transparency and accountability in methane emissions reduction within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, aligning with the country’s energy transition goals. It will highlight efforts to disclose emissions data, promote public accountability, and build civil society and media capacity for evidence-based advocacy.
