Coronavirus is having wide-ranging impacts on the mining industry. Projects have been put on hold for reasons from health and safety considerations to a fall in commodity prices. Mining companies are responding in different ways, with some mooting engaging with governments regarding their contractual obligations. But how should governments prepare to engage with investors? What are investors likely to request of host governments? What should host governments be prepared to do – and not do? How can development partners support governments this agenda?

At this webinar hosted by CONNEX Support Unit, experts will discuss these issues and consider how governments should prepare for the resumption of mining activities and new investment inflows, once an uptick in manufacturing leads to stronger demand for raw materials. The webinar will last for one hour.

Speakers include:
  • Günter Nooke, personal representative of the German chancellor for Africa and chair of the CONNEX Governing Board
  • Karl P. Sauvant, resident senior fellow, Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment and co-chair of the Advisory Committee of the CONNEX Support Unit
  • Susan Maples, counsel, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP
  • Fabien Nkot, senior advisor to the president and head of government negotiations team, Cameroon
  • Nicola Woodroffe, senior legal analyst, Natural Resource Governance Institute
