Can Mineral Governance Funding Do More With Less – What Should We Prioritize? (Mining Indaba)
10 February 2026 • 8:00AM SAST Cape Milner Hotel
This dialogue brings funders, implementing partners, and thought leaders together to grapple with a hard and necessary question: how can mineral governance funding do more with less — and if so, what should be prioritized? As demand for minerals accelerates and governance challenges intensify, funding for mineral governance is becoming increasingly constrained.
This session will present key findings from a new study commissioned by the BHP Foundation on Thinking Strategically About Mineral Governance Funding: Perspectives on Current and Future Priorities, which maps the current landscape of mineral governance funding. It explores where resources are flowing, which issues are being prioritized, and where critical gaps remain.
The discussion will unpack the alignment (and misalignment) between donor priorities, state interests and the mandates of implementing organizations, surfacing trade-offs and assumptions and laying the foundation for discussions about the most strategic ways forward.
