Exploring Sustainable Pathways to Energy Transition: Are Investments in Renewable Energies Sustainable for Africa?

This session was organized in partnership with Econews Africa, Oxfam, Power Shift Africa, Publish What You Pay (PWYP) and Tax Justice Network Africa and is a continuation of the series "East and Southern Africa Civil Society Energy Transition Joint Capacity-building and Road to COP27."
This session discussed the subject of renewable energy in Africa in the context of a just transition, energy access, and Africa’s sustainable development. The goal was to explore the current discourse around energy transition and contrasting views on viable pathways to the energy transition, particularly investment in renewable energies in Africa.
Our guest expert speakers discussed the negative impacts of the energy transition on Africa’s sustainable development, including contemporary energy challenges, such as widespread energy poverty and the possible energy economic injustices that the energy transition may or could aggravate on the continent. They then focused on the viability of investment in renewables and why this can contribute to reducing energy poverty and propelling Africa’s development path.
