On 25 May, the Strathmore Extractives Industry Centre (SEIC) at Strathmore University in partnership with the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) launched the Anglophone Africa Extractive Industries Knowledge Hub (AFREIKH).
The hub's programming addresses some of contemporary and future governance challenges facing the extractive sector on the African continent. The launch of this hub took place via virtual session, convening participants from all over the continent.
The event included a panel discussion, "Governing Africa’s Extractive Industries Amid Covid-19: Challenges and Opportunities."
In this discussion panelists explored how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the extractives sector in Africa and how it will define the future of extractive governance. Specifically, the panelist discussed:
1. How and to what extent has coronavirus pandemic affected the oil, gas and mining value chains in Africa
2. Measures that governments and private sector players have taken to address these impacts and safeguard revenues, communities, and workers
3. How can and or will the pandemic transform extractives industry operations and practices? Specifically:
